Introduction of Kingston To Mandeville JUTC Route Done After Consultations

 JUTC Press Release - July 29, 2025

Spanish Town, St. Catherine – The Jamaica Urban Transit Company Limited (JUTC) officially launched Route 512 on July 28, 2025, a new express service connecting Mandeville, Manchester to Downtown Kingston via the East–West Highway. This initiative forms part of the company’s broader rural expansion strategy to enhance access to safe, affordable, and reliable long-haul public transportation.

In light of recent concerns raised by some public passenger vehicle (PPV) operators regarding the decision-making process, the JUTC wishes to clarify that formal consultations were held ahead of today’s launch. A key stakeholder meeting took place on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, at the Manchester Municipal Corporation, involving representatives from the local transportation sector, municipal authorities, and community leadership.

According to Shantole Thompson, Corporate Communications Manager at JUTC, “We understand the importance of meaningful dialogue. Our approach to Route 512 was guided by collaboration and community input. The suggestion that this route was introduced without consultation is simply not accurate.”

Thompson emphasized that the service is not intended to replace or compete with existing operators. “JUTC and PPV operators are united in a shared mission getting Jamaicans to their destinations safely and efficiently. Our rural express routes address long-haul travel needs, while PPV operators play a critical role in offering short-haul, flexible service within communities.”

She also clarified that the three scheduled JUTC trips from Mandeville each day are carefully timed and structured in a way that does not interfere with existing PPV operations. The aim is to provide additional support for underserved periods or capacity overflow, not to disrupt the established livelihoods of private operators.

Today’s operations further underscored this shared purpose. During the second trip of the day departing Mandeville at 10:00 a.m. several taxi operators expressed support for the service, noting that there are times they are unable to accommodate all commuters, particularly during peak hours. Their feedback reinforced the need for a structured, supplemental option to meet the growing commuter demand.

JUTC remains committed to transparent dialogue and sustained cooperation with all transport stakeholders. The introduction of Route 512 underscores the Company’s belief that Jamaica’s transport ecosystem is broad enough to accommodate both public and private operators each serving distinct commuter needs while working collectively toward the shared goal of national development.

  4. The Jamaican Government is behaving as if they don't have a plan, So disorganized and chaka chaka!. With billions of dollars and many stakeholders involved in the transport industry and the many repercussions that are possible, why not take the time to properly strategize and then implement instead of flying from the seat of their pants? What next!

  5. I think it's a good idea to run that route. Rural areas need to travel in comfort too. Thanks to the Minister for the implementation.
Cry all you want, it won't change.
