Poverty in the Cayman Islands is real, although the per capita income is higher than in most Caribbean countries. Its Cayman Marl Road publication reports that the government is spending KYD3 million to support 3,000 people. The newspaper indicated that hundreds are facing homelessness. Minister Isaac Rankin disclosed the figures in parliament.
There is a report of bullying from an unlikely place, and that is the office of the DPP in Cayman.
The Caymanian lawmakers are moving to give Caymanians greater protection in key areas of the economy. Lawmakers are calling for tighter restrictions on foreign-controlled businesses and arguing that sectors such as watersports and public transportation should ultimately be reserved for Caymanians.
The question is, how do you determine when Caymanians are facilitating foreign investors? Will Jamaica and other Caribbean countries be looking favourable at this idea?
There is an interesting story in the Cayman Marl Road publication last month. It reports that a Jamaican man, Tyron Burrell, 26, who attended Lacovia High School, was murdered by Sherrell Jackson, age 31. It is interesting to note that the dispute arose over his wife going out for the evening with her female friend. Could this be a case of jealousy, or was the female friend concerned about how her friend was being treated by her husband?
The latest information is that Sherrell Jackson has been charged with murder, and she also had a court appearance.
