The People's National Party (PNP) extends its congratulations to the Democratic Party of the United States on its historic victories in the midterm elections, which saw the Party secure control of both chambers of Congress and achieve significant electoral gains across the country.
PNP President and Leader of the Opposition, Mark Golding, MP, said the results represent an important moment in American political history and reaffirm the enduring strength of democratic participation, accountability and the rule of law. “The American people have exercised their democratic right to determine the direction of their country, and their voices have been heard. These elections are a powerful reminder that democracy is strengthened when citizens participate, institutions are respected, and those entrusted with public office are held accountable,” Mr Golding stated.
Mr Golding also welcomed the historic milestones achieved during the elections, including the election of Keisha Lance Bottoms as the first Black woman governor in United States history and Peggy Flanagan as the first Native American woman elected to the US Senate. He said these achievements represent important advances in political representation and demonstrate the continuing ability of democratic institutions to create opportunities for broader participation and leadership.
The Opposition Leader extended special congratulations to Congresswoman Yvette Clarke on her overwhelming re-election victory in New York's 9th Congressional District. He noted with pride that Congresswoman Clarke is the daughter of two distinguished Jamaicans, Leslie and Dr Una Clarke, and has continued to honour her Jamaican heritage through her longstanding commitment to public service and the strengthening of relations between the United States and the Caribbean. “Congresswoman Clarke's remarkable victory is a source of pride for Jamaicans at home and throughout the diaspora. Her continued leadership in the United States Congress, particularly as Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, reflects the significant contribution that Jamaicans and their descendants continue to make to public life internationally,” Mr Golding said.
Turning to the wider election results, Mr Golding stated “We congratulate the Democratic Party and its leadership on this remarkable achievement. At a time when the international community faces considerable political, economic and security challenges, we are counting on stable, principled leadership that upholds democratic values, respects the rule of law and advances meaningful cooperation among nations,” Mr Golding added.
The PNP reaffirmed the importance of the longstanding relationship between Jamaica and the United States, grounded in shared democratic traditions, strong people-to-people ties and mutual interests in regional stability, economic development and international cooperation.
The Party expressed its hope that the outcome of the elections will contribute to constructive engagement, stronger democratic institutions and a renewed commitment to freedom, justice and respect for human dignity.
