Dr. Winsome Christie's Message on World Pharmacists Day

Dr. Winsome Christie
President, Pharmaceutical Society of Jamaica.

World Pharmacists Day is celebrated on September 25, 2022, across the globe, this year it’s  under the theme 'Pharmacy United In Action For A Healthier World'.

This theme emphasizes the importance of the pharmacist’s positive impact on the health of   communities with which they are associated and aims to strengthen unity among members of the profession.

The United Nations in 2015 highlighted 17 sustainable goals (SGDs) as a call to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that  by 2030 all people will enjoy peace and prosperity.

Good Health and Well Being is Goal 3 and has 13 targets, for non-communicable diseases (such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, chronic respiratory diseases and mental health) and communicable diseases (for example, HIV, tuberculosis and neglected tropical diseases). We have seen improvements in many of these areas and our profession should be proud of and make known its contributions.

The pharmacist’s roles are many and varied and have been identified by the World Health Organization as duties performed by the Nine Star Pharmacist. These include: caregiver, decision-maker, communicator, manager, life-long-learner, teacher, leader, entrepreneur and researcher

As a result they are a trusted member of the healthcare team because they use their knowledge to foster long lasting relationships with their customers. Their expertise, competence and consistency have been demonstrated after their academic and then experiential (internship) training as they carry out their functions as healthcare professionals. The lifelong learning ensures that  consistency and competence are maintained as they carry out their varied roles.

As scientists, when we see public distrust at its all-time high both for societal leaders and information sources we need to exert our influence to provide credible evidenced based information to combat and reduce the trust barometers which are off the scale when it comes to distrust of the media and public leaders.

Quoting from the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) ”The patient-pharmacist relationships are grounded in trust built over time. The public trusts our advice; They trust us to maintain confidentiality. As is the case internationally more and more governments are trusting pharmacists to administer vaccines and to provide other expanded services, such as testing. Healthcare systems trust us to find solutions for medicines shortages. There are many more examples of our expertise being utilized to improve healthcare outcomes and costs.”

So join the Pharmaceutical Society of Jamaica as we observe  World Pharmacists Day with our local and international colleagues during our annual Pharmacy Conference September 22-25, 2022.

Students Need Scholarships and Grants?

It is interesting that a minister of government has pointed out that many students are not interested in applying for scholarships.

I have been promoting two scholarships, tenable at the University of the West Indies and grants for students entering high schools, and the interest by students has been abysmally low. I thought that these are difficult times in Jamaica especially for parents sending their children to high school. I keep on posting on this page and announcing on radio the JAD2.4 million scholarships tenable at the University of the West Indies. I also have USD2000 available for high school students as grants. Interest in these scholarships and grants, have been very low. I wonder if students are just looking for free money.

Covid-19 on the Decline - Will You get That Visa

I understand that there is still a backlog of cases dealing with applications for US visas. It can still take more than a year to get your visa. If you already had a visa and your visa has expired within the last four years, then it might not take so long to get an interview and to get that visa.

Corey Derby with stage name Corey Rhymes speaks about getting that visa.

Government To Take Action To Protect Insurance Industry

Peter Levy

Mr. Peter Levy, Managing Director for BCCI, has said that Jamaica is in the grey area as far as German Government officials are concerned. My understanding is that the German Government is unhappy with some of our financial regulations which gives Jamaica tax haven status. If changes are not made to these laws, then Jamaica could end up not being able to do business with German insurance companies which facilitates reinsurance of our insured risks. If Jamaican companies are not allowed to reinsure their risks, then insuring your properties and motor vehicles could become very expensive.

Mr. Peter Levy spoke with Vernon Derby on Riddim FM this week.

Vernon Derby Happy That More are Calling For Death Penalty

Consumer advocate and talk show host Vernon Derby did not mince words about our political leaders
MP Robert Montague

who he described as being weak and as being cowards. He said that Jamaicans must stand up and let the leaders know that they have have enough of crime and particular murders. He said that when we give convicted murderers life sentence, we are punishing the public, who will have to pay for their upkeep while in prison.

Earlier this month, MP Robert Montague declared that if we are not willing to hang the murderers, then we should remove that law from the books.

Crime Continues

On The Ground Reporter says that there was a drive by shooting in Shooter's Hill and at least one person has died.

Registrar General Department Limits Printing of Certificates

Charlton McFarlane

The Registrar General’s Department (RGD) has suspended printing of the first free birth certificates and limited the maximum number of copies persons can apply and pay for, effective Monday, September 19.

The suspension, which is expected to last until Friday, September 30, results from supply chain logistical challenges sparked by the COVID-19 pandemic.

This has affected the production and shipment of the security paper used to print the certificates.

The RGD’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Charlton McFarlane, told JIS News that the lingering challenges fuelled by the pandemic, “which have been complicated by other international disruptions, have negatively affected the global supply chain.”

“As a result of this, our security paper supplier would have indicated to us that they were having challenges with the production and shipment of the paper,” he informed.

“We are down to a critical level in our vaults and based on our projections and with the new timeline for the delivery of security papers, which is sometime next week, we have taken the decision to temporarily suspend the printing of the first free birth certificates just for this two-week period,” the CEO added.

The agency has also decided to limit the number of copies of certificates that persons would normally apply and pay for.

“On average, a customer would apply and pay for two birth certificates. But at this time, we are only allowing said customer to apply for one copy, if it is a birth or marriage certificate,” Mr. McFarlane indicated.

Regarding death certificates, the CEO explained that persons can apply for a maximum of two.

“Death certificates are normally required by various stakeholders. So, we decided that one copy would not necessarily be sufficient for the effective facilitation of business,” he explained.

Mr. McFarlane pointed out that only customers applying for certificates between September 19 and 30 and requesting a turnaround time for delivery during that period, will be affected.

“If a person comes to the RGD next week Friday (September 30) and applies for a certificate with a requested seven-day delivery time, their delivery date would fall in October. So their application would be processed normally because, by then, our stock would have been replenished,” he advised.

“We hope that the disruption will be minimal and apologise to our customers for the inconvenience that this has caused,” Mr. McFarlane said.

The RGD is Jamaica’s sole repository of birth, marriage, still birth, and death records.

Lobbying For Others - I Do It Because I Love It

I came across this picture of a Gleaner article which gives you an idea how long I have been lobbying for persons and organizations. I believe that I spent possible two years on this case. While being involved in this matter, I ended up in what could have been a serious car accident while heading to Manchester to meet some transport operators. Those so called Dina busses were sold to these transport operators and they were second hand buses and were not in good condition. These transport operators thought that they were getting new buses.

It was a successful fight in that if my memory serves me right, the operators got back over JAD75 million. The lawyer was paid - I got absolutely nothing; not even a thank you letter.  Probably some of us are born to do what we do and therefore we have to continue doing what we do. Of course there are other success stories such as fighting for Nannyville residents in Kingston to get their land titles, preventing business developments in residential areas, fighting for changes in the operation of the JOS and others.

My work was taken to another level when I was invited to go back into broadcasting. I must say that programme did extremely well. One of the most satisfying things for me is when a United Kingdom citizen brought the work that I was doing to the attention of the BBC and I was invited to be on a BBC programme. The work continues on Riddim FM which host's my programme SpotOn. Thanks to Mr. Al Robinson and his team for ensuring that the voice of the people continue to be heard.

I have to point out that from those early days, I realized that I was living in a very corrupt country and if you are too straight you will not survive! Some of you will know that on more that one occasion my life was in danger. This last don who confronted me, ended up hugging me downtown and apologizing to me. I did not even recognize him then. He was subsequently murdered by those who had taken over as dons I understand.

I have more stories to tell. Thanks to many of you who continue to give me support over the years.

Should Minister Chang Apologize to all Criminals???

 Wat A Ting!

We have lambasted Minister Chang for sleeping on the job. He is now awake, so he must speak the peoples talk. His first responsibility is to his constituents.  I believe that any gunman who is armed with a gun and takes the fight to the police is on a suicide mission.

What advice would you give to the police who is facing an armed gunman? Tell the police to aim carefully at one of the gunman's feet? Now, while the officer is aiming at the gun man's feet, the gun man blows off the policeman head!

They say that bad man has the right to live and get the best healthcare. In the meantime they continue to kill us off and take up hospital space. Yes, take up space and  preventing decent  and law abiding Jamaicans from getting good healthcare.  No wonder one businessman recommended that Vybz  Kartel should be appointed as an Ambassador to encourage persons to take the Covid-19 vaccine.

What a country, what a life! God help we!!!
