Over 3,000 Castleton Residents to Benefit From Upgraded Water System

Press Release From The Office of The Prime Minister, May 18, 2025:

Prime Minister Andrew Holness

More Than 3,000 Castleton Residents to Benefit from Upgraded Water System as Government Advances Push for Water Security

“This administration remains deeply committed to the principle of balanced development, ensuring that infrastructure investments are spread equitably across the country. Let me be clear, this is not the end of our investment in Castleton. It is a signal of what is to come.”- Prime Minister Holness

Prime Minister Dr. The Most Hon. Andrew Holness has reiterated the Government’s commitment to equitable, resilient development with the commissioning of the Castleton Pipeline Replacement Project in St. Mary.

The upgraded system will provide improved water access to over 3,000 residents in Castleton, Friendship Gap, and Cleary Spring.

Speaking at the official ceremony on Friday (May 16), Prime Minister Holness said the upgraded water supply system is part of a broader national push to secure Jamaica’s water infrastructure.

“Today is not just a celebration of new infrastructure, but it is a signal of what we mean when we talk about real development with infrastructure that improves lives, builds resilience, and unlocks opportunity,” the Prime Minister stated.

Dr. Holness said the $25.1 million investment, spearheaded by the National Water Commission (NWC) and the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation, will see the replacement of old, inefficient pipelines with two kilometres of modern, four-inch galvanised mains, delivering stronger water pressure and more reliable water flow to homes.

“The expanded capacity will ensure stronger water pressure and a more reliable flow to households. We are also dramatically reducing technical water losses, leaks and inefficiencies that have historically wasted valuable treated water and undermined system reliability,” the Prime Minister noted.

Underscoring the benefits to residents, Prime Minister Holness added:

"Access to clean, reliable water is a fundamental human right. It affects health outcomes, educational achievement, economic productivity, and quality of life. A child should never have to walk miles to fetch water before school. A farmer should not have to choose between watering crops and preserving household supply.”

Prime Minister Holness also highlighted that Castleton’s water system is being built with future generations in mind.

“This administration remains deeply committed to the principle of balanced development, ensuring that infrastructure investments are spread equitably across the country. Let me be clear, this is not the end of our investment in Castleton. It is a signal of what is to come.”

The Castleton project is one of several rural infrastructure upgrades as part of the Government’s drive toward Vision 2030, with a special focus on building inclusive, sustainable, and water-secure communities across Jamaica.

JLP's Central Executive Supports Government’s Decision to Appeal Constitutional Court Ruling

Press Release From the Jamaica Labour Party, May 18, 2025:

The Central Executive of the Jamaica Labour Party, on Sunday, May 18, 2025, threw its support behind the Government of Jamaica’s decision to appeal the ruling of the Constitutional Court that the States of Public Emergency imposed between January 2018 and February 2023 were unconstitutional.

The Central Executive noted that it respects the ruling of the Court; however, it expressed confidence that an appeal, pursued to its fullest extent, will affirm as lawful the actions of the Parliament, the Government, and the Governor General in declaring the States of Emergency, which have contributed to a major reduction in violent crime, including murder.

Members of the Central Executive also supported the Government’s position that Jamaica’s high rate of violent crime, which led to the declaration of the enhanced security measure a few years ago, was in fact tantamount to a state of emergency.

JLP Issues Statement on The Selection of Candidate for North Central St. Andrew

Release From The Jamaica Labour Party, May 18, 2025:

The Central Executive of the Jamaica Labour Party was advised during its meeting on May 18, 2025 that both Delano Seiveright and Christian Tavares-Finson have formally withdrawn their application to be selected as the Party's candidate for North Central St. Andrew to allow for a resetting of the process of finalizing a candidate.

The withdrawal follows a review by the Party.

The withdrawal will allow the Party Secretariat to conduct a consultation with key stakeholders, including the Executive and Workers of North Central St. Andrew in the coming weeks as it restarts the process of finalising a candidate within the rules of the Party.

The Central Executive accepted the decision of Mr. Tavares-Finson and Senator Seiveright and noted that both are valued members of the Party.

Both Senator Seiveright and Mr. Tavares-Finson further committed to having  their supporters respect the Party's rules and regulations and to act in the interest of Party unity.

North Central St. Andrew is represented in the House of Representatives by the Honourable Karl Samuda. Mr. Samuda remains Chairman of the constituency during the process of finalising a candidate.

Can Obeah Win In The Courts

A lawyer said on RJR's 'That's A Rap' today that the Privy Council still makes our laws. I hope that I am not misquoting the lawyer. I did not know that the Privy Council makes laws for Jamaica. My understanding is that the Privy Council interprets the law and sets precedents based on its interpretation of the law.

The discussion on radio was about a case being filed in the Jamaican court to have the Obeah Act declared unconstitutional. In trying to get rid of outdated colonial laws, we should not throw out the baby with the bathwater. If an obeah man takes money from someone to do acts that he is not capable of doing, could that be dealt with under another law if the Obeah Act is repealed?

Can the lawyers help me with this one?

What is The Correct Answer?

The question displayed in the picture above was asked during the news on TVJ last week. I thought the answer was obvious, but as far as I can recall, no one got the correct answer!

Do you know the answer?

Breaking News? UWI To Charge Massive Parking Fees?

This must be Fake News of the year. You take a patient to the university hospital, and you have to dig out that money to pay for parking at the university hospital? Is this the university hospital's capitalism in action? This must be Fake News.

If this is true, then start preparing to have a wad of cash with you to pay toll fees, fees to park at shops and at the banks. Don't forget that the police are just around the corner.

I wonder if the bicycle and motorbike riders will pay the same amounts?

I now see the strategy. More man and more woman have car fi drive - milk dem dry.

A State of Emergency Evokes Serious Memories

Many people believe that the recent States of Emergency (SOEs) have helped to reduce the level of crime in Jamaica. They probably do not understand why many are not just worried about the constitutionality of SOEs, but also the history of a very nasty state of emergency in Jamaica. This was the 1976 State of Emergency.

This makes the decision of the courts this week to rule the recent SOEs unconstitutional very intriguing.

How many of my Bark Di Trute readers heard about the 1976 State of Emergency? I will not go into details, but the level of state terrorism then was abominable. Many were detained without just cause, and many lost their lives.  Jamaica should never go down that road again.
