JTA Negotiations With Government Not Over As Yet!

The following is a statement from the Jamaica Techers Association (JTA) President, LaSonja Harrison:

LaSonja Harrison - JTA President

The Jamaica Teachers Association JTA remains in conversation with the Ministry of Finance re-negotiating the best remuneration package for its members under this restructuring exercise of the government of Jamaica.

While we have made some strides, there are concerns on our part.  While we aren't clairvoyant and can't read the minds of those with whom we negotiate, for now, we will interpret as an error the latest feedback from government reflecting a worst position for some categories of teachers than that which was shared in the previous documents we received. Without a doubt we would have highlighted this retrograde step, as never seen before during a negotiation, as well as other areas of concern.

We anticipate correction to this interpreted error on the part of government and anticipate immediate addressing of same so further discussions can take place. The teachers' business require diligence and accuracy, there is no room for three card tricks!

Attacks On Police In The Caribbean

The Caribbean Federation of Police Welfare Associations (CFPWA) is aware of and continues to closely monitor the attacks on police officers across the region whilst performing their lawful duties. We have noted the attacks on police officers in St. Lucia, Jamaica, and most recently the Bahamas as well as Turks and Caicos Islands. Some of these attacks have been fatal, and others have left members seriously injured. These incidents are concerning to us as a CFPWA because gun violence is not tolerated in our communities across the region, nor are brazen attacks on police officers.

The safety and security of society in the various jurisdictions is the primary responsibility of police officers who are entrusted with the responsibility of preserving and maintaining law and order. It is our members who stand as a buffer between the law-abiding citizens and the criminals in our society.

We recognize the extremely challenging and dangerous environment in which our police officers must operate, yet our members continue to give selfless service for the betterment of the region. We condemn these preposterous acts of violence and brazen attacks on our officers. As a CFPWA, we strongly support our members who use justifiable force to protect themselves and the lives of law abiding citizens throughout the region. We want to remind our members that self-preservation comes first.

The CFPWA would like to encourage all of our police organizations and governments to establish a legal defense fund to assist our officers if charges are brought against them during the lawful execution of their duties and deadly force is used.

Finally, the CFPWA continues to urge all our police organizations and governments to ensure that our members have proper insurance coverage and proper protective gear when being deployed, along with the necessary lethal and non-lethal options, along with body-worn cameras to capture our version of an incident or an encounter.

JTA President's World Teachers’ Day Message

La Sonja Robinson

Theme: “The Transformation of Education Begins with Teachers.”

Happy World Teachers’ Day my colleagues locally and globally! As we join the international community of educators to recognize as well as celebrate our worth and work, we are cognizant of the fact that education globally is poised for a birthing/transformation owing to the major shifts affecting the sector. These shifts are for the most part, the result of perennial challenges that were illuminated or worsened by the covid-19 pandemic, hence the theme: “The Transformation of Education begins with Teachers”.

These challenges have frustrated teachers to the point of a global exodus from the profession. The lack of professional courtesy extended to us as practitioners, poor working conditions and an unliveable wage compounded by the maladjusted behaviours displayed by many of our students. If nothing else, what became glaringly obvious was the lack of effective parenting in the homes from which our students come.

Thank you, my colleagues, that despite these negatives, you who have chosen to stay, remain dedicated and committed to the greater cause of nation building. Your goal remains that of honing Jamaica’s greatest asset, our human resource, our children. May the Eternal Father with whom this nation has a covenantal relationship, continually bless, strengthen, and encourage your hearts as well as enlarge your territories.

Be assured colleagues that The Jamaica Teachers’ Association, your Union remains steadfast, unwavering to join with our international partners: the Caribbean Union of Teachers, American Federation of Teachers and Education International among others to continue the agitation that will ensure educators remain central to the conversation regarding the transformation of education.

Locally, as we lead said discussion in collaboration with the relevant stakeholders, germane to this conversation must be: a review of our philosophy of education; financing of same to include better resourcing of schools for the provision equitable access for ALL Jamaican children; as well as a liveable remuneration package for us as practitioners. These and other issues such as fixing early childhood education as well as giving adequate attention to special needs students are critical, as the learning condition of the student is the working condition of the teacher. Hence, my colleagues we continue with a meticulous eye to monitor and participate in the discourse re the Jamaica Teaching Council Bill and the Compensation Review along with other policy directives that will result in paradigm shifts in our educational landscape.

We must “Revisit the Foundation; Building our Human Capital through Equitable Educational Opportunities.”

The JTA celebrates you this and every day my colleagues.  Your sacrificial service to nation building has not gone unnoticed.

Do continue your labour of love to ensure Jamaica’s original mandate is fulfilled, “that Jamaica may, under God, increase in beauty, fellowship and prosperity and play her part in advancing the welfare of the whole human race”. Let us continue to Unite and Serve.

This Must be a Miracle!!!

This is an unbelievable story. The sender was so shocked that he did not get the persons name who did the good deed. If you are the person then send a WhatsApp message to me at 876 816-5261.

Hi Vernon. My name is Barry Williams. I have been a Christian for the last 53 years. (I am 67 years old)

Last week Wednesday  night September 29th, I parked my car in my garage in Golden Acres, St. Andrew

I removed some of its contents( including my wallet, which contained a significant amount of cash, all my credit cards, all my health cards, and my Driver's licence) from the inside of the car and placed them on the top of the car, the intention being to make several trips upstairs with the contents of the car and place them in specific rooms upstairs. On Thursday September 29th, I drove to a business place, parked the car and did some business. I then drove to 6 other business places including the Tax Office at Constant Spring (you know how crowded this place is at month end). I conducted my business at the Tax Office and headed for home driving through Cassava Piece and on to Roehampton Close.( All told I spent about 3 hours on the road, with the car parked in various locations for long periods). On reaching Roehamption Drive, I heard an incessant horn-blowing behind me. Now I must tell you that I am very intolerant of vehicles blowing me from behind on the road (taxi men are notorious for this) as I am convinced that it makes no sense to drive faster than 40 _ 50 km per hour anywhere in Kingston as the roads and traffic do not allow for a faster speed. When the taxis try to blow me out of the way, I slow down to between 10 _ 20 km per hour, and when they try to overtake me, I turn on my right indicator, and take great pleasure in seeing and hearing them slamming on their brakes and falling back in the line of traffic behind me. However, this horn-blowing sounded desperate and I saw that it was not a taxi so I decided to pull over into the Rubis gas station on Red Hills road across from the former (Price Rite Supermarket)(people still call it by that name). On pulling over a 4 x4 pickup pulled up alongside me and a the nice lady driving, gently said " Sir is that your wallet on the top of your car?".I came out of my car and investigated, and sure enough, there it was _ my wallet cotaining all that I described above, sitting on top of my car_ a Toyota Rav 4 ( you know their tops are VERY smooth). Well I recovered my wallet, thanked the lady profusely and told her she was an angel, but before I could get her name, she just smiled at me, waved me off and drove away. I would like to meet her again to thank her officially. The 4 x 4 pick up was grey in colour with " 4 x 4 written on the sides. The lady was dark in colour with very bright eyes and a beautiful smile. I see this as a miracle directly from God for the following reasons:

  1. There is no way the wallet could have remained on the top of the car without falling off, with me driving downhill/uphill/along very bumpy roads from Golden Acres to Constant Spring road .
  2. I made several stops over the 3 hour period I was on the road, and in very crowded areas. How is it that not even one pedestrian saw the wallet and stole it. I believe that God deliberately blinded their eyes to the wallet.
  3. In today's Jamaica, you are not going to find many people who did what that lady did. She drove out of her way for nearly one mile, blowing her horn to help me.

I really want to meet her again!!! Thanks.

SpotOn On Monday, October 3, 2022 - Riddim FM

Paula Llewellyn - Director of Public Prosecution

Ms. Paula Llewellyn will be my guest on Be My Guest, Monday, October 3, 2022. Many have tried to take on this lady but this is one tough lady and she sticks to one highway. Be careful how you try to overtake her - She travels on the right side on the highway of the law. This must be a difficult road to follow in this society since the media landscape is usually about sensationalism and who gets the news first, and the people are mainly about getting their pound of flesh. The DPP has spent a lot of time educating the public and behaving like a true servant of the people.

Keith Wellington - Principal of STETHS

Keith Wellington, Principal of STETHS (St. Elizabeth Technical High School) and also President of ISSA (Inter Secondary Schools Association) will be my guest during Talk Yu Talk. We will talk about the level of indiscipline in our schools. We will look at how functional our educational system is and to what extent the system is preparing our students for life. Let us hear what another Principal and another leader has to say on SpotOn.

Rohan James - Chairman, Police Federation

I hope to also speak with the Chairman of the Police Federation, Corporal Rohan James, who will tell us why a policeman in uniform was barred from doing business at a government office last week . This one you will have to hear in order to believe it!

Nadine Williams, Anthony Gayle and Namdi Thompson will join me after lunch to talk about the prices for ground provisions and also for fish.

Rains and Flooding.

The rains continue to cause significant flooding on the island even after hurricane Ian had missed the island and went on to batter western Florida in the United States of America. Damage was done to Holland Bamboo, and at least one resident lost their home when a tree fell on it.

Roads across the island became river courses. Even yesterday areas in Clarendon were flooded. Cars were caught in the floods and many were washed to the side of the road. Some motorists will have a hefty repair bill coming, assuming that some of these vehicles can be repaired.

One wonders if persons could have been warned before entering this flooded area. Many roads across the island have been badly damaged. There are craters all over the roads in the city. We should all now be aware that our roads are apparently made to carry water when there is a shower of rain. Our drains are poorly maintained and citizens often times contribute to the state of our drains by dumping all type of junk in these drains.

This is in the Lauriston Division

Beenie Man Brought More Riddim To Riddim FM

International Artiste Beenie Man

Riddim FM is blowing like a category 5 hurricane across Jamaica and the world these days. Major upgrades have been done to the station's system and the station is now sounding crisp and crystal clear across the landscape. This week we heard from listeners in Guyana who said that they were locked to Riddim FM.

Over the past few months, hosts have been having some high profile guests and also citizens across the island have been sending in their voices mails to air their views on the station.

The station is not only attracting persons from all walks of life, but also some high profile and international stars. On Friday, September 30, host of Real Rock, Ramona Samuels the petite lady with the sensuous and raspy voice, lured Beenie Man to the studios of Riddim FM.

It was a journey of love for the King of Dancehall, who it took over one hour to maneuver through the heavy traffic from Old Hope Road to Riddim FM on Cargill Avenue. Listeners excitement peaked as they wondered if the King of Dancehall would make it. Time was running out and the show Real Rock was coming to an end. A last minute call was made to have the showtime extended. The King did not disappoint.

Beenie Man was met by Vernon Derby, the host of SpotOn. Both the Dancehall King and Vernon have worked together in the entertainment business on the Tastee Talent Show, which at that time was produced by media consultant and business woman, Lois Grant.

It was a wonderful day for Riddim FM, and the bubbling, effervescent, and dynamic Riddim FM host, Ramona Samuels. Real Rock comes after SpotOn at 1:00 pm or 1300 EST.
