Bark Di Trute Write's To The PM About the Shoddy Road Maintenance Today

Dear Mr. Prime Minister,

While you are busy working, some public sector agencies are making you and your government look awful. You need to ensure that ineffective leaders of certain agencies are removed.

Today, while it was raining, I felt a tremor like an earthquake, so I peeped outside. It was a roller going down the avenue. I saw a group of workers on top of a truck, and some were pouring marl into a few potholes.

These potholes were not cleaned out first. While they were pouring the marl into the potholes, there was a shower of rain. Some of the marl would have been washed away. The smaller potholes were not filled with marl, because it was not economical to do so. Contractors cannot make big money fixing small potholes.

I started to take some pictures of what was taking place because I believe my fellow taxpayers would appreciate that. The gentleman driving the roller took strong objections to me taking pictures. It was clear that the work that they were doing in the public thoroughfare was private and confidential and not to be captured on camera.

Mr. Prime Minister, you need to demand that these contractors and workers fix the roads properly. What I saw today was just to pretend that work was being done. I wonder who supervised the work?

Mr. Prime Minister, I would like to know if an invoice was submitted for workers pretending that the road was being fixed. With the performance of these workers, you don't need the opposition party to campaign against you because those workers did an excellent job of that today.

Looking forward to hearing from you, PM, as to what action you will take.

Breaking News - Will Trump's New Tariffs on Some Countries Affect Jamaica?

Trump enacting sweeping tariffs on Mexico and Canada could be the beginning of a nasty trade war.

The US President's 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada will be effective on Tuesday. He also doubled the tariff on all Chinese imports to 20% from 10%.

The question is, will these tariffs affect Jamaica? Do we get these goods, which will attract additional tariffs via the US?

Interesting days are ahead.

NWC Starts Emergency Sewage Work in Greater Portmore

Press Release From The Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation

                                                          March 3, 2025

Emergency Works Underway at Greater Portmore Sewage System to Bring Relief to Residents

Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation, Hon. Matthew Samuda, today disclosed that the National Water Commission (NWC), has initiated emergency rehabilitation works at the Greater Portmore sewage pond to address the severe challenges affecting residents, students, and businesses in the area.

Following a tour of the facility, Minister Samuda said, “The current condition of the western sewage ponds has led to intolerable conditions, affecting citizens living in proximity and students of Greater Portmore high school. The western ponds will require a similar level of upgrade completed at the eastern sewage ponds in 2022, which were completed at a cost of $935 million”.

The Minister who has portfolio responsibility for water noted that with the rapid growth of Portmore’s population and Improper disposal of personal hygiene products, including condoms and sanitary napkins, a strain is on the existing infrastructure, necessitating immediate intervention.

He went on to outline the ongoing and planned emergency works:

  • De-sludging of the sewage ponds to remove accumulated waste and restore proper function.
  • Installation of three (3) aerators, to enhance wastewater treatment.
  • Deployment of two (2) additional pumps to increase pumping efficiency—one already installed and operational, with the second to be used as a standby unit.
  • Exploration of deodorising solutions to reduce unpleasant odours; testing is currently underway.
  • De-bushing and clearing of vegetation at the sewage ponds, with work already underway.
  • Implementation of strict access control measures to prevent waste deposits and prevent similar disruptions during school hours.

Minister Samuda expressed deep concern over the impact of the sewage issues on residents and students, “We recognise the distress this situation has caused, and we sincerely apologise to the residents and students who are being affected. We are moving as quickly as possible to implement solutions that will provide relief”.

The NWC and MEGJC are working closely with the school administration and community stakeholders to ensure minimal displacement and the efficient execution of these critical upgrades. While some relief is expected within 24 hours, the full scope of work is anticipated to be completed within three weeks.

A Suit Maketh A Man!

What has the world come to? Now you will find people with no class anywhere. I understand that a journalist asked Mr. Volodymyr Zelenskyy why he did not wear a suit to the White House. Am I to believe that because people in western countries wear suits, the whole world should follow?

I was waiting to see if he would ask Mr. Zelensky if he was wearing his underpants. The arrogance of some people is unbelievable. The journalist is no different from those in other countries, where they dictate to women to cover up their faces.

A pointing finger can be threatening. If I were the leader of a country and certain courtesy and level of decorum could not be guaranteed, I would not be caught dead in that country.

Mr. Zelenskyy is lucky he is not a coloured person. He could have been deported to Haiti.

The Cayman Islands

Hon. Juliana O'Connor-Connolly JP, MP, Premier of Grand Cayman

Cayman Islands

Can We Work Closer With Other Islands?

To what extent can we partner with the Cayman Islands? We partner with Cuba in dealing with our health sector, although this is frowned on by our friends up north. Have we explored how our neighbours can work with us more closely? First, we need to encourage travel between our islands in the Caribbean. We therefore need to reduce the cost of airfare to these countries. Is this possible? Do we have cultural exchanges with our neighbours?

Cayman Islands and Crime

Crime is a creeping problem in the Cayman Islands, and I decided to just feature some crime reports and a few other things happening in that island. I would like residents of those islands who read my blog to add their comments.

The island is our close neighbour, but we are not close. Is it because it is still a colony of the United Kingdom? I cannot recall the Premier paying an official visit to Jamaica.

Man Stabbed

Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS) officers responded to an emergency call just after 2:10 AM reporting a man with stab wounds on Mary Street.

Findings so far indicate that the stabbing occurred near the junction of Mary Street and Shedden Road. A suspect is now in custody.

Anyone with information can submit it anonymously through the RCIPS Confidential Tip Line at 949-7777 or via the RCIPS website www.rcips.ky.

Men Charged With Murder

Two West Bay men, ages 24 and 41, have been formally charged with attempted murder and unlawful possession of a firearm in connection with a shooting incident that occurred at Centennial Towers on February 22.

The charges stem from an incident that took place around 2:00 AM last Saturday when police responded to reports of gunfire at the West Bay shopping plaza. According to investigators, two men entered the Centennial Towers parking lot on foot from the direction of Boggy Sands and opened fire at two individuals.

Robbery

A 28-year-old man from North Side was arrested following the robbery that took place on Friday, 21 February, at Latin Taste restaurant on Mary Street in George Town.

Attempted Murder

The 22-year-old man who was arrested in relation to the attempted murder of a security guard at a construction site over the weekend has been charged by the police with attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm. The man appeared before the court yesterday, Monday, 24 February, where he was remanded in custody and scheduled to return on 7 Mar.

Concerns About Appointment

The report from Grand Cayman is that the UPM government has replaced the conservation council with political appointees. This body is responsible for protecting the environment. First we should understand whether in Grand Cayman or any country in the world, where governments make appointments, these are political appointments. What is desired is that the people appointed to positions have the necessary skill sets to make certain decisions. If they don't, they should have others do the assessment for them.

There is a tendency in many countries to undermine the democratic process by saying people are politically appointed. It is the right of the government to make certain appointments. What matters is if competent persons are appointed. It makes no sense to have a democratic society where the people elect their leaders and the leaders are mere figureheads.

First Female Primier

The Hon. Juliana O'Connor-Connolly is the first female premier of the Cayman Islands.

PM Dr. Andrew Holness Tours Portmore Resilience Park

Press Release From Office of the Prime Minister:

Portmore Resilience Park Becomes Reality: Government Delivers on Its Commitment
“The Portmore Resilience Park is no longer a promise; it’s no longer an idea. It is now coming nicely into a reality.”- Prime Minister Holness

Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fulfilling commitments and delivering for the people of Jamaica.

Speaking yesterday (February 28) during a tour of the construction site for the Portmore Resilience Park, Prime Minister Holness said what was once a concept is now becoming a reality, demonstrating the government’s position of action over words.

“The Portmore Resilience Park is no longer a promise; it’s no longer an idea. It is now coming nicely into a reality; my record as Prime Minister has been to take almost all uncompleted, talked-about ideas and make the greatest effort to convert them into reality,” stated Prime Minister Holness.

The Resilience Park, which is scheduled to be complete by September this year, will be a modern, multifunctional public space designed to enhance the quality of life for Portmore residents. Features of the park will include a jogging trail with elevation for added intensity, a central pavilion, concession facilities, a covered hall for sports such as netball, basketball, and table tennis, outdoor courts, and beautifully landscaped green spaces with flowers and grass. Additionally, provisions for small businesses and a block of restrooms will ensure convenience for the residents of Portmore.

The Prime Minister says the park is the latest in the government’s ongoing plan, through the Urban Development Corporation (UDC), to build a park in every parish for Jamaicans to have green, recreational spaces where they can enjoy quality time outdoors.

Prime Minister Holness emphasized the importance of community stewardship in maintaining the park’s value and beauty.

“The Urban Development Corporation will be responsible for maintenance, but no matter how many wardens are there or how much we clean, if persons using the park discard waste improperly, it will take away from the park’s value. I implore everyone to care for the park as if it is your own front yard,” the Prime Minister urged.

This park will be called the Resilience Park as an embodiment of the values and ethos Jamaica holds dear.

“Resilience is a national value that we want to cultivate in all Jamaicans. Our ability to withstand adversity and recover from challenges defines us, and this park symbolizes that strength,” Prime Minister Holness added.

As the government continues to transform ambitious ideas into impactful developments, Prime Minister Holness noted that the Portmore Resilience Park stands as a testament to the administration’s commitment to action. The Prime Minister looks forward to its official opening and encourages all Jamaicans to embrace and enjoy this vibrant public space.
