Enjoying The Weekend In Port Antonio

One of my supporters is taking a break in Port Antonio. She says that the roads are terrible in the town. They are not laying pipes in the town.

She stayed at Blue Hole in Port Antonio and she captured these two pictures shown below:

Crowded Cross Roads Tax Office

Persons have complained that the tax office in Cross Road in Kingston, is too small and therefore it is difficult to maintain the minimal distance for the Covid-19 protocol. On the other hand they are pleased with the space at the Constant Spring Tax office and tax payers report that the service there is very good.

Carey Robinson who has been doing the popular TV show 'Hill an' Gully Ride on TVJ, has passed on. I first met Carey Robinson when he asked me to read Sir Alexander Bustamante's Quotes at the unveiling of the National Hero's monument at Hero's Park in Kingston.

Carey Robinson was a journalist, author and an historian. A graduate of Howard University, Carey has worked at the Jamaica Gleaner, JIS and the JBC. He was at one time the General Manager at the JBC.

Covid-19 Still A Dance - Wear Yu Masks

Many persons have been complaining about the high fines for not wearing masks. Some persons have been calling on the government to reduce the fine. Some persons might like that, since they could refuse to wear the mask and only pay a very small fine for not doing so.

Some persons feel that if you are wearing a mask and they are not wearing one, then you are OK. Think about it, if you are in an office and some persons are not wearing masks, then persons not wearing the mask could be spreading the virus over the whole office. All you need to do is to touch a contaminated surface and inadvertently put your hands in your mouth, nostrils or even contaminate your masks!

Check These Pictures - A Murderer Could Be In Your Neighbourhood!

With over 90 persons killed so far this year in this small country of approximately 2.9 million, we are indeed in a crisis. Jamaica should be under a state of emergency and the security forces given wide powers to cauterize the mayhem that is now taking place. My heart bleeds for my country - Jamaica burns while our political leaders engage in political sparring.

These are not normal times and unusual strategies must be implemented NOW! The criminals are united and they have heavy fire power. If they unite and decide to challenge the state, they could in a matter of minutes overthrow the government of this country. This could be the beginning of lawlessness in the Caribbean. Those who are are in the guns for drugs trade or the guns for cash sale, could subsequently find Jamaica an ideal place where crime and corruption rise daily like the sun, rising above the hills.

Jamaica's crime problem was once the problem of the so call 'ghetto' areas, but it is now a national problem, which like a fast spreading cancer, is now taking over the whole country. We note that Haitians who are wanted by the police for allegedly committing certain crimes in that country, have been found in Jamaica. Last year January, a plane crashed landed on the south coast and many felt that it had just delivered a major drug cargo. We are yet to hear what has happened to the occupants of that airplane.

What Jamaica Needs

  • Jamaica now needs strong leaders who can be trusted. Leaders who do not support corruption nor crime. It is now urgent that laws be enacted with teeth to drive fear into those who challenge the state.
  • The country now needs a mandatory national identification system. This will form the basis of identifying all nationals and this will make it easier to identify criminals. Can you imagine we are looking for criminals and we are unaware of even the registered names for some of them.
  • We need social laws which will pave the way for appropriate socialization strategies to encourage the development of strong family units. We need to have a society where the child has a right to know his mother and his father.
  • There must be laws which clearly state the responsibilities of all parents and we should have penalties supported by education and appropriate socialization to ensure that persons have children that they can afford to maintain and educate.
  • The police must be given the authority to organized persons at the community level to assist them in the fight against crime.  These community persons should become a part of the Jamaica Reserve Community Police Corp. They should be trained and armed to protect their communities from these domestic terrorists.
  • Community courts should be set up now to deal with petty crimes in communities and this would free up the other courts to deal with major crimes. There should be a Court in every district/town and in the metropolitan areas the numbers should be increased depending on the population density of the various areas.
  • Any one caught with an illegal gun should be given life sentence at hard labour, The convict should be made to work and pay for his/her upkeep while being incarcerated.
  • The people of this country need to wake up and realize that they need to send a strong message to all criminals that they will not be welcomed in their communities.

The police must stand strong because they and their relatives are also falling victims to  these 'dutty criminals'.  While creating this post, a member of the Jamaica Constabulary Force informed me that there was a shooting on Salem Road in Montego Bay this Tuesday, and two of her uncles and a cousin were shot. The cousin died and one of her uncle is now in a critical state.  The family is unable to meet the medical costs for the injured relatives.

DCP Fitz Bailey

This week Deputy Commission of Police, Fitz Bailey presented a list of wanted men and he is seeking the assistance of citizens in capturing these men.

Bank Fees A Curse On The Nation

The following is a release from MP Fitz Jackson:

The recent announcement by the two largest banks in Jamaica, the Bank of Nova Scotia and National Commercial Bank, has once again highlighted the continued  cruel, unreasonable and heartless deductions from account holders through a range of fee penalties. Their actions continue unabated, without any regulatory restriction  due to the Government’s persistence in allowing it. The administration, using its majority, has continued to block the passage of the Bill before Parliament that offers some protection to the public. This Bill would allow account holders to make transactions against their own accounts without the penalty of fees. These transactions would include making withdrawals, deposits, transfers, account inquiries, cashing of cheques, among other routine transactions.  Why should an account

holder be penalized by the charging of a fee for using their own money, which the banks already have the privilege of using to earn for themselves? The Bill before Parliament does not require the banks to share their profits from use of depositors funds. The charging of fees to account holders to use their own money, provides a double benefit to the banks, and a loss to the depositors.

Banks, like all other businesses incur operating expenses like salaries, utilities, marketing and promotion. These operating expenses for their peculiar banking activities would include the counting of the monies they established themselves to collect, using modern technologies and not just by hand, together  with their transportation and safekeeping as they deem imperative.

The provisions of the Bill were arrived at after extensive bipartisan discussions and agreement between both JLP and PNP  Members of Parliament, including current senior members including Ministers Karl Samuda, Audley Shaw and Daryl Vaz while serving as members of Parliamentary committee that considered the matter. These Parliamentarians, among others, have now  seemingly surrendered to the lobbying of the banks, and abandoned the protection of everyday Jamaicans, micro, small and medium size businesses, pensioners and those marginally employed in the public and private sectors, including the unemployed.

I am heartened by the recent announcement by some officers of the JLP, who have now recognized that the public ought to be protected from the wicked bank fees. This bold move by JLP officers is commendable and demonstrates good conscience and patriotism. I urge my fellow Members on the Government side of the Parliament to demonstrate their own courage and patriotism in defence of the thousands of Jamaicans who voted for them in their various constituencies. It is to the majority of our constituents across the country to whom we are  beholden, and not to the few bank owners who extract over $50.0 billions each year in fees from account  holders.

We all as Members  of Parliament must always be mindful that our individual or collective failure to act in protection of fellow Jamaicans, makes us complicit with the banks in their continued unjust practices. Future generations and history, will record how we would have failed our people and country.

The Bill has been kept on the order paper since its defeat in 2018, and re-tabling in October 2020, immediately after the last general elections. This ensures the ongoing opportunity for the Government to act “at the drop of a hat”, in protection of ordinary deposit holders and prescribe a minimum level of transaction services without fees. This will ease the burden on consumers while still allowing banks to earn profits. We are being called upon to put Jamaica first, look out for the ordinary man, and stand up for what is right, even for once”.

Statement from Trevor Samuels - National Consumers League

Trevor Samuels
Hi Vernon,

It seems as if the banking sector’s New Years  gift to banking consumers is a significant increase in fees charged to consumers. Services that were not attracting fees before are not now excluded. The banks were always encouraging customers to use the ATMs, but fees are now charged for those services .Most banks no longer welcome customers to the banking halls as they used to, so elderly persons who are not computer savvy find it difficult to access simple services. Try to call banks by phone and it is almost hopeless to get them. I am not aware of any bank making a loss, maybe a decline in profits but most persons do so since the pandemic and have to live with it, When you look at the difference in rates between the deposits and loans it is mostly unfair - a small percent vs a high rate to the borrower. For years the banks have resisted a banking code  and what they have accepted hardly change things.

Banks no longer are competitive so if you  want to change it hardly makes sense . This does little for consumer choice,. People who desire to save need to seek other financial institutions which offer better rates.  Consumers should only keep what they need for day to day expenses in savings and chequing accounts. Consumers are encouraged to shop around if they have money they want to save and keep close to the inflation rate.

__________________________________________________

Editors Note:

In dealing with the financial institutions, the real power lies in the hands of consumers. Consumers must take a stand on this issue of  increased bank fees. The credit unions must be empowered to  offer all the services now being offered by the banks. The lack of competition in the area is the real challenge

For a long time now, I have used radio and social media pages to highlight what has been happening in the banking and also the insurance sector which are not in the consumers interest. Mr. Jackson has taken the matter to another level. The Consumer Affairs Commission has also  been speaking with the banks and has even come up with a proposal which would help to make for a more level playing field. The National Consumers League has been talking about the matter. The consumers of Jamaica are being taken for a joy ride and we need to say enough is enough.

The following short message was sent to me by someone who follows my page:

Opposition Leader
Mark Golding

I hear the Opposition Leader giving the Police Commissioner and the Minister of National Security an ultimatum.

He has no moral authority whatsoever.to say a word. He first needs to address crime in his constituency, unite his party and reign in Dayton Campbell.

He needs to do all this within 60 days or pack his bags and go.

No Child Should Be Left Behind..? Seriously Jamaica?

Lois Grant

This is what Jamaica's Ministry of Education claims... Every child must learn and no child should be left behind. But the practice of what is prevailing in some schools belies this claim. So says one of my elderly retired educators who called to tell me the story of what has happened at a prominent rural school in Jamaica.

She asked..How can every child learn under some of these oppressive and backward  Principals, who want to show their power?

Since the return of face to face teaching, she got calls from parents complaining that their children were turned back from a school in rural Jamaica by the principal for two of what they consider inconsiderate and frivolous reasons in this pandemic stressful time. They felt it was an unnecessary exhibit of power by the principal who they suggested should be the one getting some cane-ing to put some common sense in his head.

Case #1: One child while in the process of ironing her blouse for school, experienced an electricity outage. But so excited she was to be going back to classes, she insisted on wearing her half ironed blouse to school. However, when she turned up, the principal who was standing at the gate, ordered her to return home to get her uniform properly pressed. She was not even given a chance to explain that it was the JPS (Jamaica's Public Shame) that had caused her embarrassing moment.

"What kind of principal is this who in these times is so caught up with appearances over the need to educate a child?", my elderly friend asked. "Where is his conscience, fully well knowing that the unreliable services of the JPS prevail not only in the corporate area but more so in rural Jamaica and people no longer have the coal irons to rescue them."

Case 2:  Same principal, same school. Several other students were turned back for being late. The parent lamented that transportation was the problem as the remote area has lost some of the unregistered robot taxis and with the reopening of school, things have just not been normalized.

The parent asked "What is the principal doing at the gate turning back children in this first week of resettling back to what may never be normalcy again? Is it that he has nothing else to do? Why doesn't he go teach a class.?".the complaining parent queried of my elderly friend..

They must STOP IT. Stop it at once...lamented my elderly retired educator as she shared the story. It is heartbreaking to hear that children who have been away for almost 2 years are unable many of them to participate in online classes because they have no wifi in their communities or parents just are not up to speed with the technology. Now they are now being turned back from school because of these reasons.

The  2 years loss of education because of Covid is going to impact on our society in a way we cannot even imagine, she lamented. We have felt the fall out of the system before with the half-day schoolers..the ones who went to the junior secondary schools. Now, this?

Teachers are themselves under stress with the online classes, not to mention the unavailability of tablets, wifi and data for thousands of children, especially those in rural Jamaica.

Lois with a group of children

"Education is not just about getting letters behind your name. It's about applying the knowledge that you have gained and using common sense, discretion and logic" my retired educator concluded.

Aretha Taylor Says, "Men Who are Disrespectful To Women Are Not Men"

Aretha Taylor

My name is Aretha Taylor. I’m originally from Jamaica, but I grew up in Brooklyn, New York, USA. I would like to address a serious problem in Jamaica with our men. That problem is the way women are mistreated and harassed in the streets. Growing up in New York, I’ve encountered various types of men, but none like Jamaican men. Sadly, the men here are overly aggressive, vulgar, disrespectful, and extremely sexual, from the least to the greatest. It is very discouraging leaving your home to even run errands, because every other man has something negative to say. I know that’s probably normal for you in this country, but it isn’t normal for me and for so many other women who are either visiting or returned residents. There are women I know of from the United States of America  and the United Kingdom who refuses to visit Jamaica again because of their experience with the men here.

I’ve spoken with many local women in Jamaica who say sometimes they are embarrassed when walking on the streets because of the obscene thing’s men shout at them. They are too ashamed to say anything to these men. I recall one incident, when a man followed me for almost two blocks trying to pick me up, until I turned around and told him that He was harassing me and that he needed to 'back up'. My question to the men is…Does it make you feel like you are more of a man when you talk to women and young girls in that manner? Well, it doesn’t make you more of a man... It doesn’t make you a man at all.

A man is supposed to honour, respect, protect, and regard a woman. He’s supposed to lift her up and make her feel beautiful. But instead, you have degraded your women, disrespected your women, belittled your women, verbally abused your women, demeaned your women, and verbally and emotionally you have raped your women. This is what you do each time you speak to us in a vulgar and disrespectful way. There are some girls and women who like that kind of negative attention and go out of their way seeking it by dressing scandalously. It’s because they’re insecure and have a low self-esteem and they don’t know their worth. Listen my brothers, what you don’t realize is that when you speak to women and young girls the way you do in the streets, it shows you have no self-respect, no self-love, and you don’t know your own worth.  You might feel that by disrespecting and shouting obscene things at a woman, that makes you feel like a man, but that should make you feel ashamed.

Being who I am, I’ve had to correct a few men on how they speak to me in the streets, but I do it in a way to show them where they’re wrong, and they get it. Unfortunately, I don’t think most men here in Jamaica are aware of how they approach a woman is wrong and how you make us feel. Most men weren’t taught the right way, and so it becomes a cycle. We can do better as a people. We MUST do better. Ladies, stop responding to vulgarity, obscenity, and disrespect. STOP thinking it’s a compliment and know it’s a put down. Know your worth my sisters. Men, STOP degrading and discarding us. We are Queens…So treat us as such!

OUR Gives JPS Another Cease and Desist Order

OUR Press Release, KINGSTON, Jamaica; 2022 January 25

Ansord Hewitt
Director General, OUR

The Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR) has issued a further Directive to the Jamaica Public Service Company Limited (JPS) to “Cease and Desist” the curtailment of service to communities where it has implemented its Transformer Protection Programme pilot project.

This latest Directive took effect on 2022 January 18 and will expire within 180 days. That is, by 2022 July 17.

It follows the expiration of the original Cease and Desist Order on 2022 January 13, which was in effect for ninety (90) days to allow the OUR to conduct its investigation and publish its findings regarding JPS's activities under this pilot project.

The OUR has not been able to complete its investigations as JPS has not complied with a request for data and other information that is critical to the OUR’s examination of the issues.

Therefore, additional time is required for the OUR  to complete the investigation and publish its findings.

The OUR has instructed JPS to maintain the suspension of its Transformer Protection Programme pilot project that curtailed electricity services in the affected communities. It is also prohibited from taking similar actions in any other community across the island as outlined in the first Directive issued to the JPS on 2021 October 15.

BACKGROUND

The OUR’s decision to first issue a Cease and Desist Order which first took effect on 2021 October 15, followed consumer complaints since 2021 July about prolonged power outages in several communities, with reports of many occurring daily. The OUR wrote to the JPS requesting information as part of its investigation into the complaints.

On 2021 October 4, JPS responded apprising the OUR for the first time of the implementation of its ‘Transformer Protection Programme’ pilot project. The response also gave an indication of the nature and extent of the curtailment of service that significantly affected JPS’s paying customers in approximately eighty-eight communities. The information suggested that the outages were more widespread in sections of St. Catherine, Kingston and St. Andrew South, Kingston and St. Andrew North, Clarendon and St. James.

The OUR is against all forms of electricity theft which affects the provision of economical and adequate electricity services. The OUR is also mindful of JPS’s obligations to take steps to ensure the reliability, adequacy, safety and efficiency of the service that it provides to the public.

The OUR has not approved any policy or measure that would see the use of outages, imposed on legitimate customers, as a means of controlling electricity losses.

Deeside Residents Calling On MP To Fix Roads

MP Tova Hamilton Wanted!

Citizens continue to complain about the conditions of roads across the island. Many claim that the NWA does a poor job of maintaining the roads. Persons claim that oftentimes the NWA just make squares in the roads and leave them there for a long time which does damage to their cars. These dug out areas are left there for an extended period and when it rains the holes get bigger and bigger.

Recently I received some pictures showing a very bad road in Deeside. The MP for the constituency is Ms. Tova Hamilton. I have been unable to ascertain whether or not the road falls under the parish council or under central government. Citizens in the area have been complaining bitterly about the damage being done to their cars over the years.

Reports are that residents living in the area who drive are now taking taxis.

Is Michael Spence Right About The Maroons?

Michael Spence
Michael Spence

I agree that the Maroon voice should be one voice and no one should sell out. If the allegations are true that there are sell out chiefs, that is a very despicable move. I am sympathetic to  Chief Currie's cause no matter what. As a matter of give and take he should apologize on behalf of the Maroons to the enslaved runaways who they caught and returned to their white enslavers.

Black Jamaicans should however seek to do for themselves what Chief Currie seeks to do for the Maroons and have one voice.

Jamaica has to date a third of it's population squatting and that is a disgrace to Jamaica calling itself civilized combine that with black on black badmind and murder. Perfect Divide and Rule techniques.

Citizen Recorded Video of Abusive Cop - Police Commissioner Anderson, Orders Investigation

Commissioner of Police
Major General Antony Anderson

Jamaica's Commissioner of Police, Major General Antony Anderson, has ordered an investigation  into an incident of abusive behaviour by an officer towards civilians. The incident occurred during an operation in Kingston in early January.

With the level of crime on the increase, I encourage citizens to unite in the fight against crime. We should ensure that all our police officers act according to the law and we should work with the Commissioner of Police to drive fear into the hearts of these cold criminals and rid our country of them.

Commuters Being Overcharged

Merdina Callum
Acting Corporate Communication Manager

Press Release From The Transport Authority

Kingston- Jamaica, January 20, 2022

The Transport Authority is warning public passenger vehicle (PPV) operators that they should immediately desist from the practice of overcharging commuters’ fares for use of public transportation across the island.

Since the beginning of 2022, the Authority has received several complaints from the commuting public that unscrupulous persons have produced and are issuing notices of increased fares in the Kingston Metropolitan Transport Region (KMTR). The Authority categorically denies that any fare increase has been granted for public passenger vehicle operators since the start of the year. For those operators that are insisting commuters pay more than the approved fares, this practice is illegal and in violation of the rights of the commuters. Accordingly, the Transport Authority operations teams will be monitoring this situation closely and operators found to be “unlawfully deceiving passengers as to the fare for a journey” will be prosecuted under regulation 129 (d) of the Road Traffic Regulations.

In the meantime, the commuting public is reminded that one of the dangers of using unlicensed public passenger vehicles and hackney carriages being operated as route taxis is that these operators often charge exorbitant/unapproved fares. The Authority is therefore urging the commuting public to use licenced public transport vehicles which display red public passenger vehicle plates and the light blue Transport Authority sticker on the windshield with expiration dates of 2022 and onwards.

It should also be noted that the Transport Authority does not have any approved “shared service” for Hackney Carriages.

Commuters may report incidents of overcharging through the Authority’s toll free line at 888-991-5687 and WhatsApp images or videos to 876-551-8196, providing the licence plate numbers and the routes for the vehicles.

Dr. Neil Gardner Alive and Well

Dr. Neil Gardner

Dr. Neil Gardner chiropractor-neurologist  who has his practice in Kingston is alive and well. A driver with the same name lost his life in a motor vehicle accident this afternoon. It is sad to hear of this loss of this driver. However, many of us are sighing a sigh of relief  knowing that Dr. Neil Gardner is still alive and is at home enjoying himself with his family.

Jamaica And The 3 Cs That Will Cripple Us

Once upon a time the big thing in Jamaica was to have the 3 Vs. Oh yes to be in the big league you had to have your VCR, Visa and your Volvo. Now Jamaica is facing the 3 worst Cs. They are Crime, Corruption and Covid-19 and these dangerous three could cripple this little country.

Did The Maroons Understand The Treaty

Hi Vernon , All the best to you for the new year, I know I wished you before but no harm reinforcing it.

The Maroons of Accompong have for centuries celebrated the  signing of a treaty ending years of war between themselves and the British. For years now I have been wondering  if this treaty should be celebrated since the said maroons seemed to have gained little if anything. I wonder if Cudjoe who was illiterate and signed with an X had the benefit of a lawyer or some other  advisor to tell him not to sign that document. Every one of the 15 clauses comprising that treaty is in favour of the British. How could he ask his enemy to draft such a document. I just wonder. What do they celebrate, Cudjoe’s birthday or the treaty? ( I am sure you have read this document which is available on line)

Westmoreland and Crime

Westmoreland has had one of the most successful independents in Jamaica in "Slave Boy Evans" so will or can George Wright be as successful and not resign? Mr Wright could perhaps just say, "I Shall Return" but will he as a no name disposable in his party allegedly from the: wrong class, wrong name, wrong colour, wrong education, wrong profession, wrong values and some may say wrong parish (not being close to or from Kingston and St Andrew). Some of his party insiders may say wrong party leave us alone go elsewhere we don't need you to retain power. What about a pardon for Mr Wright and a rehabilitation process allowed to work we are sure there are many in the  upper echelons of society even in government past and present who are allegedly worse not caught on  ubiquitous social media cameras.

There is an opportunity to demonstrate publicly the universal principle of punishment and rehabilitation for reprehensible gender based violence. As a daughter of mine protested, "What about the violence meted out on the children physical and verbal going on and gone unnoticed nationally by these same women complaining the loudest. Who is going to champion the prevention of the daily suffering of  children who remain unprotected brutalized and miserable"? I was stunned, taken aback and horrified by this teenagers observation. As a nation we need to have a holistic look at endemic abuse of all people and gender, women, men and our children.Right and wrong must be clearly defined and demarcated not only focussing on wether Mr Wright it wrong or right.

Western Jamaica

The truth is that St James/western Jamaica needs helicopters in their fleet for effective rapid response and tracking. St James is not Montego Bay; Westmoreland is not Savanalamar neither is Hanover Lucea. Ten cars sound good but give me even one helicopter as the terrain is not accessible like say Kingston where you can drive to it. Let us say even Canterbury in the heart of Montego Bay is a nightmare to be avoided by any police St James alone on the outskirts is like jungle policing and distance by road is a major obstacle and if things get real bad fighting criminals is like guerrilla warfare. If you have problems in Flankers and then at the same time in Cambridge also Maroon Town and need to hurry some reinforcements to Roehampton. Minister get the police some helicopters for rapid response no traffic jams, no potholes, no roadblocks and no narrow roads to stop them. Think about policing Wareika Hills to give the people living in the Kingston quasi colonial power an idea a similar method would be needed at times02/11/16

Who Cares About The Visually Impaired?

Message From Conrad Harris - Jamaica Society for The Blind

Can you help us in getting this issue dealt with. I learned that someone had dug a trench near the entrance to the Old Hope Road gate of Campion College. The trench has been left open and unprotected. This is an area used by persons traveling to and from the Jamaica Society for the Blind. I have been calling from this morning but I cannot find out who is responsible. Campion College and National Water Commission say they are not responsible and NWA have promised to get back to me but have not done so.

It is particularly dangerous because blind persons normally walk on the inside of the sidewalk to avoid water which normally collects at Campion’s gate. It rained this afternoon.

Editors Note:

This is another case which leads one to ask, "Who is in charge of Jamaica?"  Organizations do some horrible things and the leadership of these organizations seem to get away with everything. This is just amazing! The area referred to is in Kingston, Jamaica.

Please share this post to as many persons as possible and hopefully this will get the responsible agency to act now.
