MANOEUVRING THE SHIFTING TIDES OF MUSIC AND CULTURE

As I sat down to work on one of my short stories today, I decided to create the perfect ambience by adding some background music to my surroundings. I turned to my son’s TV and browsed through his playlist, hoping to find something that would inspire me. Among the options, a dancehall mix by Nicki Minaj caught my eye, boasting an astonishing 1.5 billion views on the first video alone. I was taken aback by this unprecedented level of popularity, something I had never encountered during my time in the  music industry.

Intrigued, I decided to watch the video in its entirety. What unfolded before me was a spectacle of women engaging in provocative dance moves, exuding sensuality in every frame. Nicki Minaj, with her flawless dolly physique and explicit choreography, held the young audience captive with her allure.

Reflecting on the changing landscape of music and culture, I acknowledged the reality of this sexually fluid generation, where boundaries are blurred, and expressions of sexuality are diverse and unapologetic. It was evident that the music industry has evolved since my days, embracing a new era of expression and freedom.

Seeking solace in nostalgia, I switched to music from my era, indulging in the soulful melodies of artistes like Luther Vandross and other R&B legends. The lyrical elegance and refined sensibility of that era provided a stark contrast to the explicitness of contemporary music.

As I reminisced about my past involvement in the industry, particularly when I operated as  Innercity Promotions, a sense of irony washed over me. It was our pioneering efforts that laid the foundation for the global phenomenon that dancehall has become. But as the genre continues to evolve, I cannot  help but wonder about its future direction.

Will dancehall be embraced as a legitimate genre, akin to carnival celebrations that accept nudity and uninhibited revelry? Only time will tell. For now, I chose to retreat to the comfort of my era's music, leaving the pulsating rhythms of this generation to those who embrace its passion.

Jamaicans For Justice and That Kissing Girls Press Release

Jamaica for Justice (JFJ) sent out a release this week condemning how the Principal of St. James High, Joseph Williams dealt with the incident of the two kissing girls.

My first question to JFJ is, "Has anyone from Jamaica For Justice spoken to the school administration?" My information is that the JFJ did not. Did the parents make a report to JFJ?

JFJ states, "If what is stated in the media is true..." If you are not sure the report is true, why have you started to denounce the principal?

JFJ needs to ask, did the girls' parents make a complaint to the Board before contacting the various media houses?

Based on what the girls were alleged to have done, there is no way they could have remained in that student community whether they had the right to or not - law or no law. There is this tendency to jump on the populist route and talk about children's rights while at the same time undermining the authority of our schools.

We might argue that people have a right to decide their sexual preference, but a school is a place of learning, not a place for boys to seek to have intimate relationships with girls or vice versa. It is not a place also for girls to have an intimate relationship with other girls nor for the boys to do so with other boys.

The JFJ raises some interesting points in that interesting release. The release talks about sexual education without any moral judgment. Is JFJ only concerned about the law and not moral judgment?

How can the JFJ denounce how the matter was handled when the matter has not been investigated by anybody? What is natural justice for the JFJ when you have condemned the school administration?

The JFJ should apologize to the students and the administration of St. James High. I wonder if Mikel Jackson was speaking for herself? Is the press release a reflection of the directors' opinion.

Click here to read the JFJ statement, understand what they are defending, and add your comments below.

JFJ Blasts Principal of St. James High About Handling of Girls Kissing Incident

The Jamaica for Justice has put out the Following Release:

Mickel Jackson

JFJ CALLS FOR REINSTATEMENT OF ST. JAMES HIGH STUDENT AND GREATER ADHERENCE TO SCHOOL DISCIPLINARY PROCEDURES

Thursday, April 25, 2024 – The recent incident at St. James High School again calls into question the arbitrary use and abuse of power and authority by some school leadership around student conduct and disciplinary actions. It also raises serious cause for concern around how schools are governed and accountability mechanisms.

Firstly, if what is reported in the media is true, JFJ finds no merit in the grounds for the disciplinary action to begin with. What it raised was the need for ongoing age-appropriate comprehensive sexual education for students without shame and moral judgment. Secondly, the decision to bar the students from school, effectively expelling them, breached their right to education as well as the fundamental principles of due process as outlined in the Constitution of Jamaica. The Education Regulations 1980, which were effected pursuant to Section 43 of the Education Act sets clear framework regarding how expulsion in schools are to be done. Reports that the principal's decision was reportedly based on moral judgment rather than established guidelines is of grave concern and ought to be condemned. By circumventing the board, despite the Education regulations, there was no transparent consultative decision-making process and the students were also denied their right to appeal any disciplinary actions imposed.

We strongly denounce the handling of this entire situation by both the school administration and the education ministry in light of the parents’ account that they pursued their intervention to no avail. Apparently, an attempt for some resolution only came after the matter was raised in the media. The lack of transparency and communication in handling the situation, as highlighted by the parents' accounts, is troubling. It is imperative that educational institutions and relevant authorities prioritize open dialogue and fair procedures in addressing disciplinary matters.

JFJ also understands that one of the girls remains out of school. The leadership of the Ministry of Education is urged to address this injustice with haste. While we understand an investigation is ongoing and the Ministry awaits a report from the institution, it is imperative that the child unable to enrol in school as a result of this incident is assisted expeditiously to mitigate their disenfranchisement.

This incident underscores the necessity for reform within the legislative and regulatory framework governing education, including the Jamaica Teaching Council Act which is currently under review. The current regulations need greater clarity in addressing instances of non-compliance of board governance, frequency of meetings and their constitution. It is very troubling that the board was seemingly defunct and they did not fulfil their obligations as outlined in the varying legislation.

Furthermore, this underscores the urgent need for educational institutions to implement inclusive policies and provide a safe and supportive environment for all students. By addressing the underlying biases and prejudices within the education system, we can work towards creating a more equitable and accepting society where every student feels valued and respected.

Retreat Seventh-Day Adventist Church Pastor Send's Letter to Parents About 'Unfortunate Incident'

Pastor Linton Hamilton

Jamaicans have become insensitive to crime and the high level of indiscipline in our schools. I got a report that a Principal was stabbed at a school. The report indicated that teachers were assaulted. This matter has not been reported elsewhere as far as I know. This is a church school and the top echelons of the church were unaware of the incident. This took place at the Quickstep Kindergarten Preparatory School in St. Mary.

The following letter was sent to the parents:

I have a few concerns about how this letter is written. All letters coming from the school should be properly checked before being sent out. Persons expect high standards from our schools. For example, the format for the date should be Monday, April 29, 2024. I have other concerns but that is not the main issue.

I love how the Chairman in the letter to the parents classified the incident as - unfortunate!

The letter to the parents did not say if the matter was reported to the police and what action had been taken.

More Readings

High drama at another school.

War among students.

The Following is a Press Release from The British High Commissioner - April 24, 2024

Her Excellency Judith Slater

The Government of the United Kingdom (UK) and the Government of Jamaica have today signed a Memorandum of Understanding to formalise the UK-Jamaica Violence Prevention Partnership (VPP). The UK has committed £15 million to the partnership over the next six years to support the Government of Jamaica’s (GoJ) efforts to reduce violent crime. The VPP was announced by former UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly when he visited Jamaica in May 2023.

The programme will be implemented within the framework of GOJ’s Citizen Security Plan (CSP), and will target seven vulnerable communities and schools within these communities.

The VPP will build on previous social intervention and crime prevention support provided by the UK, including the Citizen Security and Justice Programme (CSJPIII), jointly funded with the Inter-American Development Bank and Government of Canada from 2014-2020.

Speaking at the signing Ceremony, British High Commissioner to Jamaica, Her Excellency Judith Slater said:

“The UK is pleased to be working with Jamaica to address one of the challenges that matter most to people here.”

“We are committed to supporting Jamaica in countering the issue of violent crime. This programme will help to tackle the causes of crime at source and build a safer, more prosperous society for all Jamaicans.”

The MoU was signed at the Ministry of National Security by Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of National Security, Ambassador Alison Stone Roofe and UK Development Representative for Jamaica, Mr. Oliver Blake – and witnessed by British High Commissioner to Jamaica, Her Excellency Judith Slater, Minister of Education, The Honourable Fayval Williams and State Minister in the Ministry of National Security, The Honourable Juliet Cuthbert-Flynn.

Young Jamaica Says Remove Dwayne Vaz as Caretaker

The Following is a Press Release from Young Jamaica - April 23, 2024:

Dwayne Vaz

Young Jamaica, the youth arm of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), is calling on Mark Golding, President of the People's National Party (PNP), to take immediate action in light of the damning recommendation from the Integrity Commission regarding Dwayne Vaz, the former Member of Parliament for Central Westmoreland.

The Integrity Commission's recommendation for charges to be laid against Vaz for breaching the Integrity Commission Act cannot be ignored. It is imperative for the integrity of our political system that swift and decisive action is taken. As caretaker for Central Westmoreland, Vaz's alleged misconduct undermines the trust between the electorate and their representatives.

Furthermore, Young Jamaica condemns Mark Golding's attempt to divert attention from this serious issue by perpetuating false narratives about the so-called "illicit 6." It is disappointing to see the President of the PNP resorting to such tactics to deflect attention from a member of his inner circle facing serious allegations. This manipulation of the truth is a disservice to the Jamaican people and tarnishes the reputation of our democratic process.

Young Jamaica President Rohan Walsh is demanding accountability from Golding for his role in setting this misleading narrative. The PNP President must apologize to the Jamaican people for attempting to deceive them and for prioritizing state power over truth and transparency.

It is time for Jamaica to see the PNP and Mark Golding for what they truly are – a party willing to resort to misinformation and lies in their relentless pursuit of state power at any and all costs. Young Jamaica stands firm in its commitment to integrity and accountability in our political landscape, and we urge all Jamaicans to join us in holding our leaders accountable for their actions.

People's National Party Patriots Urge the Government to Respect Constitutional Principles

The Following is a Release From the PNP Patriots - April 23, 2024:

Kingston, Jamaica – 23 April 2024 – The People's National Party Patriots is expressing deep concern over the Government's repeated disregard for the Constitution of Jamaica and the fundamental rights enshrined within it. The recent attempt by the Government to extend the tenure of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) is a glaring example of this disregard.

The Government attempted to extend the tenure of the DPP beyond constitutional limits, resulting in a ruling by the Full Court on April 18, 2024, declaring the DPP's tenure invalid. This ruling has serious implications for the effective prosecution of criminal cases, especially those involving serious offences like murder and rape.

We are also concerned about the Minister of Justice's initial stance, Mr. Delroy Chuck. He suggested that the DPP remain in office until an appeal is made. However, it's crucial to understand that no stay can be granted from a declaratory judgment since it merely reflects the existing legal status.

These constitutional missteps are not isolated incidents but are part of a pattern of behaviour by this Government. We note several other egregious actions that undermine the rule of law and erode public trust. The issues include undated resignation letters, misuse of the Disaster Risk Management Act during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the failed attempt to implement mandatory NIDS. The Government's proposition that the Chief Justice should act before formal appointment contradicts established constitutional norms. This undermines the independence of the judiciary and threatens the separation of powers, raising serious concerns about the integrity of our legal system. There constant unlawful use of States of Emergency (SOEs) as crime-fighting measures. The Government's frequent and prolonged imposition of States of Emergency without sufficient justification or adherence to constitutional safeguards is deeply troubling. This misuse of emergency powers undermines civil liberties, violates due process, and fails to address the root causes of crime, instead exacerbating tensions within affected communities.

Moreover, Minister Robert Nesta Morgan, the Minister of Information, has demonstrated a dismissive attitude towards legitimate concerns raised regarding constitutional issues. His characterisation of these issues as trivial and unimportant reflects a lack of regard for the Constitution and suggests a disregard for the intelligence and rights of the Jamaican people. Such dismissiveness is unacceptable and undermines the foundation of our democracy.

It is evident that there are serious deficiencies either in the qualifications or competence of key government officials responsible for constitutional matters, including the Minister of Justice and the Attorney General. This raises concerns about the Government's sincerity in pursuing meaningful constitutional reform.

The cumulative effect of these constitutional transgressions is a profound erosion of public trust in the Government's commitment to upholding democratic principles and protecting citizens' rights. The Patriots calls on the Government to acknowledge its responsibility to govern in accordance with the Constitution and to demonstrate a genuine commitment to accountability and respect for the rule of law.

We, therefore, call for an immediate reassessment of the constitutional reform process and urge the Government to demonstrate a genuine commitment to upholding the Constitution as the supreme law of the land.

In appointing a new DPP, we implore the Government to adhere strictly to constitutional procedures. Failure to do so will only further erode public confidence in the rule of law.

We stand ready to uphold and defend the Constitution against any further attempts to disregard its principles. For the stability and progress of our nation, it is imperative that the Government act responsibly and respect the rule of law.
